What does a Luxury Car Look Like?

Growing up, my dad always dreamed of owning a Cadillac.
Back in the 1970s, the American dream often meant driving an American luxury car like a Cadillac or Lincoln. These cars were the ultimate symbol of having “made it.” If you couldn’t afford one, you settled for the next best thing — a Buick, Oldsmobile, or maybe a Ford LTD. Foreign luxury cars like Mercedes or BMW were rare and reserved for those willing to stray from American tradition. Japanese luxury cars didn’t even exist yet.

Fast forward to today, and the landscape looks completely different. Cadillacs and Lincolns are now just a small part of a luxury market dominated by brands like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, Audi, Acura, and Infiniti. I’d argue there are far more people driving luxury cars today than there were five decades ago.

Why? In large part, it’s thanks to high residual values on many foreign luxury models, which make them attractive to lease. Leasing allows many of us who might not be able to afford the full cost of ownership to still enjoy driving a luxury vehicle — even if just for a few years at a time.
