Growing up in the ’70s, a sports car meant one thing: muscle—lots of it. V8 engines pushing out 350 to 450 horsepower were the dream. I had a special fondness for the 1969 Pontiac Firebird, probably because I owned the redline Hot Wheels version as a kid. It didn’t hurt that my dad’s Pontiac Tempest—a more conservative cousin of the Firebird—came in the exact same dark metallic blue. Later on, I fell in love with early ’70s Dodge Challengers. By the time I was a teen, these beasts were showing up on used car lots, about seven or eight years old and still full of attitude.

Back then, sports cars weren’t meant to be practical. They got 11 or 12 MPG, and rear-wheel drive wasn’t exactly ideal for snow. But none of that mattered—because they were exciting.

Today’s sports cars are a different breed. Thanks to turbocharging, hybrid powertrains, and modern tech, their 0–60 times often beat those of the classic muscle era. Some of the new retro-inspired models even look and sound like the real thing. Better yet, many now come with all-wheel drive, making them surprisingly usable year-round.

Leasing or buying a sports car isn’t such an impractical idea anymore. From Corvettes, Mustangs, Challengers, and Chargers to Camaros and performance cars from Germany and Japan—you’ve got options. I hope the sortable lease deals below help you find your dream ride.
