When I think of a family sedan, I think of road trips. One of the highlights of my childhood was piling into the car—all six of us—and hitting the road, staying at motels along the way to wherever we happened to be going, sometimes with no real destination at all. Back then, a family sedan meant something huge and long. In the early ’70s, my dad owned a large yellow Pontiac Catalina. It had no air conditioning—just the windows rolled down as we cruised along the open highways.
Even though A/C was available in the early ’70s, it was still considered a luxury upgrade. The stereo was just a basic radio with tinny-sounding speakers you could barely hear over the wind. And cruise control? That was a luxury, too—introduced in 1958, but far from common or refined in everyday sedans. Safety features we take for granted today—like backup cameras, lane-assist, and obstacle warnings—didn’t exist. Even seat belts were still optional in many cars.
Ahh, the nostalgia. I still miss that old Catalina, even though today’s smaller sedans offer so much more in terms of comfort, safety, and efficiency.
How Things have Changed
Today’s family cars are much different—safer, more practical, and maybe not quite as big. Well, to be honest, they’re much smaller. That’s because the average size of family cars has shrunk. In our old Pontiac Catalina, we had three passengers in the front and three in the back. I believe some cars even had room for four in the back!

What’s interesting is that this seating capacity is essentially the same as smaller compact cars, which also seat five. Where you do see a difference is in cargo space, legroom, and shoulder room between passengers.
